Joe Thornton belts out Britney Spears' “Baby one more time” on Swiss TV.

During the extended National Hockey League offseason several of the league's players headed overseas to play as a way to remain in game shape, and even to earn a little extra money on the side during what is the relatively short career window of a professional athlete.

Among the most prominent athletes to head over sees was veteran forward Joe Thornton of the Toronto Maple Leafs, who joined HC Davos of the Swiss League. Now Thornton and HC Davos have a history dating back over 15 years and in fact the big centerman has strong ties to Switzerland as well given that he met his wife there during his first stint with HC Davos during the 2004 - 2005 NHL lockout.

It may come as a surprise to some but Thornton is actually a relatively well known figure in Switzerland due to his time playing for HC Davos and it was for that reason that he was recently featured in an interview for MySports TV on the show Taxi Müller. The interview is nothing short of fantastic, especially considering the interviewer has to concentrate on the road the entire time he is conducting the interview, and was surrounded by a plastic wrapped bubble on top of it presumably due to the coronavirus.

During the interview at different times the driver asks Thornton to sing along to certain songs with him, the most notable of which is the world famous "Baby one more time" by recording artist Britney Spears. Now I'll be honest I do not typically associate hockey players with pop music from the late 90s, especially not when it comes to Britney Spears, but Joe was pretty confident he knew the words and to his credit put on a performance during the drive. Thornton would have been 19 or 20 years old at the time of the songs release so there's little doubt that he heard it played endlessly during his last teens or early twenties.

Now if you think this clip is good I would go one step further and recommend you watch the entire interview. Not only do you get to watch a great interview with Joe Thornton, but it also provides some insights into just how much he has connected with the country of Switzerland which is something I personally have not seen a lot of over Thornton's career. I've included the full 25 minute interview below.
