The Montreal Canadiens were not the least bit happy about this hit and judging from the reaction on social media their fans are even angrier.

On Saturday afternoon the Canadiens faced off against their not so distant rivals the Ottawa Senators and during the third period of that contest Canadiens forward Jake Evans was laid out by what appears to have been a high hit. The hit was delivered by Ottawa Senators defenseman Erik Gudbranson and it came after Evans had moved the puck up the ice and was floating forward near center ice.

To Gudbranson's defense he is clearly the much bigger man between the two but nonetheless when he delivered the hit it does look like he thrust the momentum of his body up and into the head of Evans. It was not the most egregious headshot you're ever going to see in the National Hockey League but it was enough to lay Evans out on the ice, with the young forward eventually skating off under his own power and heading back to the locker room.

The bad news for the Canadiens is that this has now created another situation in which one of their players has taken a hit up high and that hit has gone uncalled by the officials on the ice. This is not the first such incident for the Canadiens this season and it is person for that reason that their fans are so up in arms over this particular hit.

Here's the hit in real time:

Now here it is on the replay, slowed down and zoomed in this looks much worse.

There is a silver lining here for the Canadiens and that is that it looks like Evans is going to be just fine in spite of the hit. The centerman would eventually return to the game for the Canadiens which would suggest that he was put through and cleared the National Hockey League's concussion protocol.

Seeing as there was no call made by the officials on the ice at the time of the incident it will be interesting to see if the league's Department of Player Safety will chose to discipline Gudbranson.
