Caufield breaks the ice.

It was only a matter of time before Montreal Canadiens youngster Cole Caufield fired a puck into the back of the net for his first career goal in the National Hockey League, and unfortunately for the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night he scored it when it mattered most.

The Canadiens were largely on the back foot in this one with the Senators out hustling them during the game's opening period, something that would eventually lead to the Senators taking a commanding 2 - 0 lead early in the first period with one goal in each of the following frames. At that point it seemed like the Senators would eventually cruise to an easy win but the Canadiens would come alive later in the third, eventually cutting that lead down to nothing and forcing an extra frame in overtime.

It was there that Caufield stole the show, thanks in large part to some great work by Habs defenseman Jeff Petry to feed him the puck. Petry beat Senators forward Brady Tkachuk who looked a little gassed on the play and managed to feed a perfect pass to Caufield who just had to tape the puck into the net for the first goal of his NHL. As I said earlier the goal came when it mattered most for both the Senators and the Canadiens, with Caufield becoming up a huge OT winner in order to bring his Habs to within two points of the Winnipeg Jets in the North Division's standings.
