The last time that the Edmonton Oilers skated off the ice at Canadian Life Centre, they were a dejected bunch as they'd just been swept out of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Tonight, their hosts made sure that they'd once again leave their home turf winless.

The Winnipeg Jets turned in a dominating performance tonight, defeating the Oilers by a 5-1 final score in exhibition play. Jansen Harkins tallied twice for the Jets, who also got tallies from newcomer Evgeny Svechnikov as well as Kyle Connor and Austin Poganski.

Harkins got the goal scoring underway early, banging home a rebound to put his team on the scoresheet first just 45 seconds after the opening face-off.

The Jets would outshoot the Oilers by a convincing 15-4 margin in the game's opening frame.

You can say that Svechnikov is making a good impression on his new organization after he failed to gain footing within the Detroit Red Wings system. In addition to his goal, he also registered two assists.

Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck had a relatively easy night, making 17 saves on 18 Oilers shots; Oilers goaltender Ilya Konovalov stopped 16 of 19 shots before giving way to Stuart Skinner.

Brad Malone tallied the lone Oilers goal, spoiling Hellebuyck's shutout bid late in the 2nd period.

Both teams will continue their preseason schedule with another matchup against one another on Saturday, October 2 in Edmonton.
