We finally know who turned on Tim Peel’s mic that ended up getting him fired

Wow! That’s bad luck.

This is what you call bad luck, or great luck for the National Hockey League and its players. On Wednesday, the National Hockey League announced that referee Tim Peel will no longer work NHL games “now or in the future” after his comments about a Nashville penalty were heard on a hot mic during Tuesday’s  Red Wings - Predators  game. Comments made by Peel were caught on a hot mic and it was determined that it was Peel. After Viktor Arvidsson was called for tripping Jon Merrill, Peel was heard on the FOX broadcast saying, “It wasn’t much, but I wanted to get a fuckin’ penalty against Nashville early in the …” before the audio cut out.

When the audio went viral, everyone focused on what was being said and how Peel got punished. Insider Sean Shapiro dug a little deeper and found out why Peel’s mic got turned on. This is what he found out and posted on social media last night:

“I was curious of how clip made it onto broadcast. Turns out audio technician in truck was checking on ref mic and thought broadcast had already gone to commercial.

“This also isn’t uncommon in broadcasting. Audio is checked, and sometimes the commercial space is missed by a couple seconds. Obviously 99 percent of the time no one notices or something incriminating is said.”

Talk about perfect timing. Or terrible one if you’re Tim Peel and end up getting fired by the league.

Wow. A matter of seconds!
