According to a report from Vancouver Canucks insider Matt Sekeres of TSN 1040 radio, former Canucks, Nashville Predators and Dallas Stars defenseman Dan Hamhuis has officially retired from professional hockey.

The 37 year old Hamhuis bowed out of the post-season last week when his Predators dropped their best of five Qualifying Series against the Arizona Coyotes. The Smithers, BC native put up a respectable 59 goals and 356 points in 1148 career regular season games split between the Preds, Stars and Canucks. He also managed 21 points in 68 career Stanley Cup Playoff games. He was originally drafted in the first round (12th overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by the Predators. During his time with the Preds he was mostly seen as a third wheel on a team that boasted superstar blueliners Shea Weber and Ryan Suter.

He'll mostly be remembered for his steady, understated play with the Canucks during the 2010s. Brought on board as a big free agent signing in the 2010 offseason, Hamhuis was a rock for the Canucks for six seasons before moving on to play for the Stars. I know that I'll remember him most for dishing out classic hip checks like this:

Unfortunately for him it was this kind of hit that cost him and the Canucks their best shot at winning the Stanley Cup. Hamhuis absolutely ROCKED Boston Bruins forward Milan Lucic in the 2011 Stanley Cup Final causing him to not only leave the game, but also sit out the rest of the series.

All in all though, a fantastic career. Enjoy your retirement, Dan!
