Vegas Golden Knights announce contract termination
Blackhawk Up

The Chicago Blackhawks pulled off a rather eye-opening trade earlier this summer, acquiring the reigning Vezina Trophy winning goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury from the Vegas Golden Knights and only having to give up Mikael Hakkarainen in return.

After his acquisition by the Golden Knights, general manager Kelly McCrimmon said that Hakkarainen would continue to play with the AHL's Rockford Ice Hogs, despite being under contract with Vegas. And now, Hakkarainen won't get the change to suit up for his new team. According to Cap Friendly, he's been placed on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a mutual contract termination. He'll become an unrestricted free agent when the termination goes through tomorrow.

Hakkarainen, who has yet to see NHL action, didn't register a point while playing with the Ice Hogs in 14 games last season.

He's also suited up with the Indy Fuel of the ECHL, scoring a total of two goals and two assists in three games played. He also had an assist last season in six games with the Fuel.

This latest move could clear the way for him to return to his native Finland, enabling him to continue his playing career.
