The Detroit Red Wings have made a significant signing.

The Wings officially announced on Saturday that they had re-signed veteran forward Tyler Bertuzzi to a 2 year contract, a relatively short term deal all things considered. It is relatively big news when you consider the fact that Bertuzzi has often been the subject of trade speculation over the course of the past several months.

The Red Wings opted not to disclose the financial terms of this deal, however a report from Max Bultman of The Athletic would appear to indicate that Bertuzzi will come in at an average annual value of $4.75 million which means that will be his cap hit for the next two seasons. In terms of how the actual cash breaks down that is a little bit different, with Bertuzzi earning $4.25 million in the first year of his new pact and getting a sizeable raise to $5.25 million in the second year of his deal.

This will do little to dispel the trade rumors that have swirled around Bertuzzi given that this deal will now take him to unrestricted free agent status in relatively short order. Bertuzzi will be a UFA at the end of this deal which means the Red Wings will either need to negotiate a new pact with him again a year from now, trade him prior to his contract expiring, or risk seeing him walk away as a free agent at the end of the two years.

Bertuzzi got off to a very strong start for the Red Wings during the 2020 - 2021 regular season, picking up 5 goals and 2 assists for a combined 7 points over his first 9 games of the season, but that was completely derailed by a major back injury that sidelined him for the entire remainder of the season, something that is believed to have played a large role in killing any trade talks.

Bertuzzi had the surgical procedure performed at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City back in April of this year and is expected to be fully healthy and ready to begin the 2021 - 2022 regular season barring any setbacks.
