We all know how the Boston Bruins were left without their top goalie Tuukka Rask before Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals against the Carolina Hurricanes this summer, as he headed back home to attend a family emergency. During the offseason, Rask got a lot of criticism over his decision to leave the Toronto bubble, with some fans and pundits wondering if it would have an impact on his next contract with the team. The 33-year-old netminder is currently playing the last season of his eight-year contract he inked back in 2013.
On Wednesday, during the Bruins’ camp, Rask gave all of the scary details on what pushed him to leave Toronto bubble this summer, revealing additional information on what happened to his daughter. He revealed that an ambulance had to be called for his daughter the night before he left Toronto bubble.
“It was a tough decision to leave, but then again it wasn’t, because I knew it was more important for me to be home at that time.”
Rask was asked about his controversial decision amidst questions on his potential contract extension. He explained how he wants to stay in Boston and doesn’t want to play elsewhere.
“I have no intention to play anywhere else besides with the Bruins. If I’m good enough to play another one, two, three years, so be it.”
A lot of changes have taken place in Boston this offseason, and not necessarily good ones with the departures of Torey Krug and Zdeno Chara. Rask was a finalist for the Vezina Trophy, awarded to the goalie voted as best in the NHL during the regular season as he was 26-8-8 in 41 starts with a League-best 2.12 GAA, finishing second with a .929 save percentage. The Bruins better hold on to him.
