TSN host says Jesperi Kotkaniemi isn't worth Carolina's offer-sheet

Is this TSN host being too harsh?

The Carolina Hurricanes have officially tendered an offer sheet to Montreal Canadiens forward Jesperi Kotkaniemi, a reported one-year deal worth $6.1 million:

This marks only the 6th time that a player has signed said offer sheet; the most recent example is when the Habs tried to poach Canes star Sebastian Aho in 2019. Of course, the Hurricanes made reference to that when they promise Kotkaniemi a $20 singing bonus, a clear nod to Aho's jersey number. Montreal general manager Marc Bergevin will have until September 4 to match the offer sheet, or accept draft picks as compensation.

But while that remains to be sorted out, one particular hockey analyst was brutally honest in his belief that Kotkaniemi isn't worth what Carolina is dangling in front of him.

TSN's Brian Hayes, who hosts the OverDrive podcast, had this to say:

"There's no way he can match $6.1 (million), he's not good enough," Hayes explained. "He's not every going to be a superstar, he doesn't have it. There's nothing wrong with saying it, I know he went 3rd OA, he shouldn't have, they drafted him based on positional need."

The Finnish native scored five goals with three assists during Montreal's surprise run to the Stanley Cup Final last season, and has 62 points in 171 career NHL games, all with the Habs.
