It was a scary scene in Toronto on Thursday night when Maple Leafs captain John Tavares was taken off the ice on a stretcher after a collision early in the first-round playoff matchup with the Montreal Canadiens. It was a freak accident: Tavares bumped into Habs defenseman Ben Chariot, fell to the ice where he was defenseless and hit by forward Corey Perry’s knee. Trainers and doctors from both teams rushed to the ice and attended to the veteran forward before he was taken away. The game was halted for several minutes. A game which the Canadiens won to take the 1-0 lead in the series.

There is no doubt no one expected the series to kick off this way - we not only mean with a Habs’ victory - but most importantly with a severe injury to a key player.

While the news was important to report, the Toronto Sun and the Journal de Montreal are heavily criticized on Friday morning for their headlines and pictures, and how they treated the news of Tavares’ gruesome injury by making it light of the situation. Several fans, pundits and insiders aren’t pleased to see how the serious injury is getting portrayed, especially with no thought for Tavares’ family.

We simply cannot believe the use of the line Captain Crunch from the Toronto Sun!

The injury is quite severe and everyone, every single player on the ice noted how scary the situation was. Some pundits even believe the game could have been delayed longer or even reported due to the severity of Tavares’ condition.

Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe said after the loss that Tavares was conscious and communicating well. He added his tests had come back clear, though Tavares was to remain in hospital overnight.

Let’s hope he does not try to relax by reading the paper…
