The Montreal Canadiens and the Edmonton Oilers will not be facing off tonight.

Although it had been rumored for the last several minutes, we have now received official confirmation via NHL insider Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports that tonight's game between these two teams has been cancelled. The league has not yet officially announced a reason for the cancelation, but we've got a pretty good guess.

Earlier today we reported that two members of the Montreal Canadiens had been added to the COVID protocol, and I suspect that those players may very well have tested positive for the deadly virus. That is speculation on my part, but that being said there seems to have been enough of a concern here that the league felt it was unsafe to move forward with the game tonight between the Habs and the Oilers.

The players involved were forwards Joel Armia and Jesperi Kotkaniemi, and honestly you can argue that this is a lucky break at this point for the Canadiens. The Habs also announced earlier today that veteran forward Tyler Toffoli, the team's leading goal scorer and points leader, would be sidelined for at least the majority of this week due to an injury, which would have left the team significantly shorthanded against an Oilers forward group that includes the likes of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

If any new details emerge from this story we will be bringing them to you as quickly as possible.
