On Thursday, Rod Brind’Amour of the Carolina Hurricanes has been named the recipient of the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s top head coach.

On that same day, Brind’Amour agreed to a three-year contract to remain the bench boss in Raleigh. Everyone was excited to keep the winning coach in Carolina, however, fans were quickly shocked to find out the little amount of money Brind’Amour will cash $1.8 million per season.

That information was brought forth by insider Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet.

This annual salary is nothing compared to other NHL head coaches. In comparison, Joel Quenneville ($ 5.25M), Todd McLellan ($ 5M), Alain Vigneault ($ 5M), Claude Julien ($ 5M) and Peter Laviolette ($ 4.9M) almost all earn three times his annual salary.

Even Gerard Gallant, who was unemployed for almost two years and has just been hired in New York for double Brind’Amour’s salary paid by the Rangers.

And again: Brind’Amour won the Jack Adams Award for NHL coach of the year over Quenneville and Minnesota Wild coach Dean Evason.

Dundon has a reputation for being very obsessed with dollars and this is not the first time he pulls such moves to save money. Fans see it as a lack of respect for Brind’Amour, who had made it clear he was hoping to stay in Carolina in the future.

In the end, after weeks of negotiations, Dundon did not even deign to offer him a competitive salary compared to the average head coaches of the NHL. He played on the fact that Brind’Amour wanted to stay.

Over the weekend, it was also announced that Hurricanes management had given permission to their star defenseman Dougie Hamilton to discuss with other teams as he will become an unrestricted free agent this summer and who did not receive a considerable offer from the Hurricanes that convinced him not to test the market…

We get why now as Dundon’s reputation of a cheap owner comes back to the surface…
