The secrets behind the NHL team logos.

The National Hockey League has over the years created some of the most iconic and recognizable logos in all of sports and, although I obviously have my own personal biases here, I truly feel they are one of the best leagues when it comes to creating memorable logos for their franchises.

Each logo for each individual team however is more than a mere marketing symbol, and in fact over the years more and more work has gone into making each logo unique and in many cases making sure each logo has its own rich story to tell as well. In fact many fans around the league might not be fully aware of the meaning behind each and every team's logo, especially given that most casual hockey fans tend to follow their own teams exclusively.

In a recent docuseries they are calling Design Decoded, the hard working people over at the Icethetics Youtube channel put together a rather beautiful video in which they go over some of the hidden secrets behind the NHL team logos. Now how much this will be news to you will depend on just how closely you follow the sport of hockey, and don't be surprised if the secrets behind the logo of your favorite team are already known to you.

The video isn't perfect and there are some mistakes, for example they make the claim that the Montreal Canadiens logo is multi-lingual when it actually stands for "Le Club de Hockey Canadien" which is actually the official name of the Montreal Canadiens franchise and is also the name the team is incorporated under.

There are also some additional details that could have been included such as the fact that the St. Louis Blues logo is a 64th note, representing the fact that the city of St. Louis was founded in 1764, or the fact that the tip of the "i" in the Islanders logo is shaded blue to point to the location of the Nassau Coliseum on the map of long island.

That being said I think this is a terrific piece of work from the people at Icethetics and I hope that all of you enjoy it as well.
