The Toronto Maple Leafs have just pulled off another significant move.

After previously acquiring the captain of a rival team on Sunday the Leafs have now added to their goaltending depth after announcing that they have acquired veteran goaltender David Rittich via a trade.

According to an official announcement from the Maple Leafs organization, Rittich has been acquired from the Calgary Flames in exchange for the Maple Leafs third round draft selection at the 2022 National Hockey League Entry Draft. For those thinking that this may be something of a high price for Rittich, given his relatively mediocre performance this season, the Leafs are getting him at a huge discount with the Flames retaining 50% of his current salary. This no doubt played a significant factor in driving up the value of the deal for the Flames organization.

As I mentioned Rittich has been relatively mediocre this season but you have to add to that the context of him playing on a team that now appears destined to miss the playoffs. Over his 15 appearances for the Flames during the regular season the 28 year old netminder picked up just 4 wins and recorded a 2.90 goals against average and a .904 save percentage.

The motivations behind this trade for the Maple Leafs are rather obvious. Their starting netminder in Frederik Andersen is currently sitting on the sidelines due to injury and with the relatively unproven Jack Campbell leading the charge the team felt they needed an additional insurance policy in goal.

The veteran Rittich certainly fits that mould, and it will be interesting to see if the Leafs now look to take some of the load off of Campbell's shoulders as they close in on the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

There have been two other trades in the last few minutes as well if you're interested in checking them out you can find the links here:

The Boston Bruins acquired defenseman Mike Reilly from the Ottawa Senators.

The Los Angeles Kings trade forward Jeff Carter to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
