While the Seattle Kraken is still in no rush to hire a head coach, it sounds like general manager Ron Francis is focused and ready to build a roster.

It is now possible for the Kraken to start discussing potential trade with other teams as the expansion draft draws closer. Francis could come to terms with rival GMs on an amicable agreement to convince Seattle to take on one of their bad contracts in exchange for a better choice in the draft. Others will try to convince the Kraken not to select a specific player who will not be protected, due to lack of space on the protection list.

A lot can happen. For the moment, Francis is already busy shopping players as he was caught scouting the game between the Minnesota Wild and Arizona Coyotes earlier this week. He and his main scout were reportedly a keeping a close eye on these players, per insider Michael Russo of The Athletic:

“Bet they’ll be keeping a close eye on guys like Dumba, Soucy, Talbot, Sturm, Greenway, Hartman, Foligno, etc., tonight (Wild’s decisions dependent on whether they go 7-3-1 or 8-1)”

The Vegas Golden Knights basically went through the same process in their expansion year, and we expect the Kraken to get some deals done before the draft as Sin City managed to do in 2017. This was expected with the new economic reality of the NHL and the salary cap that will remain flattened for the coming seasons.

It will be very interesting to see the Kraken maneuver by the month of June when they currently have the big end of the stick with all the salary space to build a roster.
