The idea of Crosby and MacKinnon playing on the same team arises in Friedman’s article and fans are going nuts!

Elliotte Friedman was having some fun. In his latest 31 Thoughts column on Sportsnet, the insider dedicated the entry number 22 to Pittsburgh Penguins’ Sidney Crosby and Colorado Avalanche’s Nathan MacKinnon, and it sounds good.

He wrote:

“Every time I see a  Sidney Crosby / Nathan MacKinnon commercial, I wonder if they’re going to find a way to play together some day.”

Fans are used to Friedman dishing out rumours and speculations in his 31 Thoughts articles, and this entry got them excited.

To be clear here, we are aware that Friedman does not say there are talks that both players could end up on the same team. No rumours, nothing to go crazy about.

But his entry sure got fans hoping and wondering when something like this could happen, if it ever will.

There is no doubt that things look kinda shaky for the Penguins moving forward and the next season(s) might be the few left for the team to win another championship with Crosby as their captain.

This offseason, general manager Jim Rutherford traded (once again) his first round pick, this time to the Toronto Maple Leafs in a package deal to acquire forward Kasperi Kapanen. With this trade now in the books, the Penguins don’t have much more top prospects in their ranks to ensure a strong future as a contender. In fact, their prospect pool is so weak that analyst Corey Pronman has ranked the Pens’ litter 30th overall in the NHL … And that was before they traded Filip Hallander to the Leafs in the Kapanen transaction. Besides forwards Samuel Poulin and Nathan Légaré, as well as defenseman Pier-Olivier Joseph, the Penguins’ prospect pool is, well, dry.

Rutherford has been focused on one thing, winning the Stanley Cup at all costs while his team’s window is open with Crosby and Evgeni Malkin on board and playing at their best.

But what if Crosby wants more and the possibility of joining MacKinnon in Colorado arises?

We don’t know! Crosby could pull a Ray Bourque…

The fact that Friedman mentioned it as a full independent entry has fans going nuts. And it’s playing with our heads too…:

But unless it’s as teammates with Team Canada in the Olympics or the World Cup of Hockey, we don’t expect to see that happen in the NHL anytime soon.
