Earlier this offseason, it has been reported that the NHL and NHLPA had tentatively agreed to allow the Anaheim Ducks, Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, New Jersey Devils, Ottawa Senators and San Jose Sharks to get extra training time before regular training camps resume for all teams.

Those teams’ general managers had requested the extra training camp time back in August and had reportedly been informed they will get to have players on the ice sooner and longer. Their proposal reportedly requested a minimum of two additional weeks of camp, however, they won’t nearly get as much…

It was first believed that these seven non-playoff teams could benefit from an additional week in camps, however, Pierre LeBrun revealed on last night’s Insider Trading on TSN that it might just be a couple of days now, because of the tight schedule ahead of the the target start date of a potential 56-game regular season is now Jan. 13.

“It’s certainly not going to be a week and whether they have any extra time at all, we’ll see. Right now the league hopes to give those seven teams, including the Ottawa Senators, a couple of extra days ahead of all 31 teams opening camp. But it is a matter that is still open with the NHLPA, still to be determined."

After the league agreed on a 24-team format to finish the campaign, it eliminated the bottom-seven clubs, who are now hoping they won’t be too rusted to compete in 2020-21. With the NHL hoping to begin the 2020-21 season on Jan. 13, it could be nearly a full year between games for the teams who did not take part in the postseason in Toronto or Edmonton.

That new development has to hurt and let’s hope it does not get them to push the start date even further…
