Terrible update on goaltender Petr Mrazek.

The Carolina Hurricanes have provided an update on injured goaltender Petr Mrazek and unfortunately there's no good news to be shared.

The Hurricanes own Michael Smith has provided an update that comes courtesy of Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind'Amour and although nothing is definitive just yet it sounds like this one is going to be long term.

"Looks like it's going to be a little longer than we had hoped," admitted Brind'Amour on Monday.

That on it's own would have been enough to call this a terrible update on Mrazek's status but unfortunately it got even worse from there. Brind'Amour would not confirm that Mrazek will require surgery as a result of this injury, but he definitely hinted at the fact that this is where this one is going for the Hurricanes. I suspect that Brind'Amour knows this to be the case but has not received official confirmation from his medical staff just yet.

The injury occurred when Mrazek was pancaked into his own net during the first period of a matchup between the Hurricanes and the Dallas Stars over the weekend, but it was not a Stars attacker that actually crashed his net. Instead it was actually Hurricanes forward Max McCormick who ended up slamming into Mrazek, and on the slow motion replay you could clearly see that Mrazek's blocker had become pinned between his own body as well as McCormick's leg or foot. At the time Mrazek's blocker came flying off his hand so quickly after the two men collided that many believed it had to be some kind of break on the hand or possibly a potential cut from McCormick's skate. It was a rough night for McCormick who would be injured himself later on in the game.

The timing could not be worse, not only is goaltending depth incredibly important in the NHL right now due to the condensed schedule for this current season, but Mrazek was arguably off to the best start of his NHL career. His .099 goals against average and .955 save percentage through his first 4 games were nothing short of outstanding and now that red hot start has unfortunately been completely derailed.
