Thanks to Canada’s 4-1 win over Finland at the world junior men’s hockey championship Thursday, Team Canada will face Czech Republic in quarters after winning Group A at World Juniors.

While the victory was a triumphant one for the Canadians, the team also lost in the game as Alex Newhook left the contest and didn’t return. The forward was checked hard by Eemil Viro in the first period and suffered what looked like a shoulder injury. He returned to the bench with his teammates to start the second period but shortly after returned to the locker room.

On Friday, Team Canada announced that Newhook was listed as day-to-day with an upper-body injury and was not taking part in today’s practice with his teammates.

There is what the projected lineup is expected to be as practice showed new lines combinations to fill in for Newhook’s absence:

Holloway - McMichael - Cozens
Perfetti - Zary - Krebs
Quinn - Byfield - Pelletier
Mercer - Suzuki - Tomasino

Team Canada meets with the Czech Republic on Saturday. We will have to wait and see on a final update on Newhook’s condition ahead of the game.

The semifinals are Monday followed by Tuesday’s medal games at Rogers Place.

Newhook is a first-round pick by the Colorado Avalanche in 2019. He has put up two goals and five points in the first three games.

We hope to see him return later on in this tournament.
