Two alternates won’t be enough under the rules.

Team Canada was handed a tough blow on Wednesday when it lost its captain Kirby Dach for the remainder of the 2021 World Juniors after suffering a wrist injury during a pre-tournament game against Russia.

The Blackhawks talented prospect needs to head back to Chicago to undergo further examination by team doctors and a potential surgery for his gruesome injury. Dach appeared to get injured on a harmless bodycheck in the neutral zone in the third period of the preliminary game against Russia on Wednesday night. Right after contact, the young captain pulled off his glove, skated off the ice and went directly to the locker-room area. He probably saw what you just did above…

Now we learn from RDS’ Patrick Friolet that Team Canada will have to put the C on the sweater of another player to following the International Ice Hockey Federation’s rules. They want each team to have one captain and two alternates dressed for each game.

As of now with Dach out, Canada only has Bowen Byram and Dylan Cozen as alternate captains. One of them is expected to be named captain with another alternate named afterwards.

We are expected to find out on Saturday who will get to wear the letters for Canada, as the team opens the tournament against Germany. The German roster has been decimated due to several positive COVID-19 tests. Just on Thursday, it was revealed another player tested positive, which means the club only has access to 14 skaters (nine forwards and five defensemen) and two goalies.
