Sheldon Keefe with a big update on Zach Hyman.

The Toronto Maple Leafs fan base held their collective breath when they saw gritty forward Zach Hyman go down with what looked initially like a pretty significant injury roughly two weeks ago, but thankfully it has been largely good news on the Hyman front ever since that initial pang of fear. The injury turned out to be just a sprain, which meant that Hyman would be out for weeks and not months, and the trend of good news continued on Saturday with the latest update on the injured forward's status.

That update comes directly from head coach Sheldon Keefe who confirmed today that Hyman has resumed skating for the first time since he suffered what was officially diagnosed as an MCL sprain, a sign that he could soon make his return to the Maple Leafs lineup. Keefe himself admitted that the return to the ice was an encouraging sign, although he did not provide any additional details on when the forward might make his eventual return to the lineup.

Hyman suffered the injury in a matchup against the Vancouver Canucks when he was the victim of a knee on knee hit courtesy of Canucks defenseman Alex Edler. The hit, a dangerous and dirty play on the part of the Canucks defenseman, was rather blatant with Edler sticking his leg way out as you can see in the replay below.

The hit would come at a heavy cost for Edler who was challenged by Toronto Maple Leafs veteran forward Wayne Simmonds in the following game, a fight that was honestly a little hard to watch given just how brutally one sided it proved to be.

There was more good news on Saturday for the Maple Leafs as well however with Keefe also indicating that forward Riley Nash had also resumed skating alongside the aforementioned Zach Hyman.

It wasn't all good news for the Leafs however as it would appear that veteran defenseman Zach Bogosian will still need a bit of time to recover before joining the likes of Hyman and Nash back out on the ice. Keefe confirmed that Bogosian has not resumed skating and once again did not provide any hint of when the gritty defender might do so.
