The Toronto Maple Leafs made the decision to start Jack Campbell in the crease for their Stanley Cup playoffs matchup against the Montreal Canadiens, and while he played well during the series, it was the fateful Game 7 that did him and the Leafs in.

A soft goal early in the 2nd period to Habs forward Brendan Gallagher opened the scoring, and it was Campbell who said that he believed he let the rest of his teammates down.

“Worst goal of my career and it happened in Game 7,” said Campbell afterwards. “I think the team counts on me to be better and I know I can be a lot better than that.”

The Leafs were the subject of a five-part docuseries that gives fans an inside look at the 2020-21 NHL Season, right up to their heartbreaking Game 7 loss. And earlier today, head coach Sheldon Keefe revealed ahead of the series release that it was in fact Campbell who was overcome with emotion.

"Everybody deals with emotions differently and it was devastating to think of letting the city down and Spezz and Jumbo, how badly we all wanted to win for them," he said.

Of course, this will remind hockey fans of another young goaltender overcome with emotion following a Game 7 playoff loss. Former Detroit Red Wings goaltender Chris Osgood was infamously in tears in the team dressing room following a critical error against the San Jose Sharks in 1994 in the series deciding game. Leafs fans can be encouraged by the fact that Osgood went on to have a stellar career.

Campbell will be looking to build upon his stellar 17-3-2 record last season that saw him record a  2.15 goals against average and a .921 save percentage.
