It smells like a blockbuster trade is coming…

The Buffalo Sabres won the lottery and have the No. 1 pick for the upcoming draft this summer, but they might end up with another pick in the first ten selections if the rumours state true.

The Sabres aren’t sure what to do with captain Jack Eichel, whose name has surfaced more than once in trade chatter these past weeks, and the noise is that a first-round pick might be what needs to be part of the package to get him out of Buffalo.

On top of that, forward Sam Reinhart, a restricted free agent, has also come up in rumour circles which prompted Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman to report that Reinhart is already receiving a lot of interest on the trade market.

The New Jersey Devils reportedly have interest in Reinhart and hold the fourth overall draft pick this summer.

Why do we mention that? That’s because Friedman believes the Sabres will  get a second high first-round selection in July. This is how he wrote it in his latest 31 Thoughts column:

"Multiple sources indicate that if there’s any deal involving either Eichel or  Sam Reinhart , do not be surprised if the Sabres end up with a second high first-round selection in July’s draft.”

Sabres insider Lance Lysowski could only agree with him:

Reinhart finished this season with 25 goals and 40 points in 54 games on one of the worst teams in the league. If the Devils are indeed interested, would they be willing to lose their first-round pick for him?

If the Sabres are big sellers this summer, potentially losing Eichel and Reinhart, you can understand why they would look to get a top draft pick for the ultimate rebuild in Buffalo.
