Rumour: Cheap Dundon planning offer sheet revenge on Canadiens!

If there is one thing that is known across the National Hockey League is that Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon has a reputation for being very obsessed with dollars and being quite cheap. He made headlines last month when he re-signed his head coach Rod Brind’Amour to a cheap $1.8 million per season, despite having just won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s top head coach. It was also announced that Hurricanes management had given permission to their star defenseman Dougie Hamilton to discuss with other teams as he will become an unrestricted free agent this summer and did not receive a considerable offer from the Hurricanes that convinced him not to test the market…

Dundon is cheap, but it sounds like he may also be resentful. Pierre LeBrun wrote about offer sheets and mentioned how Cale Makar of the Colorado Avalanche could be a candidate for one, but also wrote that he doubts Dundon has forgiven the Montreal Canadiens for offer-sheeting Sebastien Aho last summer.

Guess who is a restricted free agent on the Habs’ roster this summer?

Jesperi Kotkaniemi.

“He finishes the sentence off by saying he’s just kidding. He thinks…”

While it sure looks like the Hurricanes are set down the middle, fans are staring to wonder if Dundon would do this only to mess with general manager Marc Bergevin, who forced him to offer more money to Aho after the offer sheet from Montreal.

Aho was tendered a five-year, $42.27 million offer sheet by the Canadiens, with an average annual value of $8.454 million. The Canes therefore matched the offer sheet, re-signing the young forward to a five-year, $42.27 million contract.

Knowing what Dundon likes (or doesn’t like) to spend, we bet he is still angry at Bergevin and this could be a way to get some revenge.

Worth the risk?
