Rumor: Two players the Leafs could look to add before the deadline.

Still some options for the Leafs.

The Toronto Maple Leafs pulled off arguably the biggest trade of the days leading up to the trade deadline so far when they acquired Columbus Blue Jackets captain Nick Foligno in a three way trade with the San Jose Sharks and Columbus Blue Jackets. Now there has been plenty of debate already about whether or not the Leafs overpaid for Foligno, but that is a topic for another day and will no doubt evolve once Foligno actually gets a chance to play for the team.

Our focus now is on what comes next from the Toronto Maple Leafs. Although it looks like the Leafs have used almost all of their cap space in this deal, they do still have $2.7 million in long term injured reserve cap space that could be used ahead of the deadline. Now whether or not they can make use of this cap space will depend on whether or not goaltender Frederik Andersen returns at some point during the regular season, and at the time of this writing it would seem more likely than not that Andersen will return before the playoffs.

In spite of that Toronto Maple Leafs insider James Mirtle has indicated he believes there could still be a pair of moves on the to do list of Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas, the addition of a depth defenseman and the addition of another goaltender as an insurance policy before they head into the playoffs. In his most recent pick for The Athletic, Mirtle went so far as to suggest that the Leafs could look to their bitter provincial rivals, the Ottawa Senators, for a solution to both of those problems.

From Mirtle:

It’s possible they also look to add a depth defenceman off the cap. Someone like Braydon Coburn in Ottawa, who is already on a taxi squad, could be a fit. And if Toronto wanted to do a two-for-one deal, they could also bring in Anton Forsberg from the Senators as the depth goalie.

It may look like the Maple Leafs have made their big move and will now move forward with this current roster, but it would appear that there are at least some who believe there may still be more trades to come.
