Rumor: Flyers looking to move on from Jakub Voracek.

It may very well be the end of an era in Philadelphia.

There are reports that the Philadelphia Flyers may be seeking to make some truly seismic changes to their roster this offseason and perhaps the most surprising name mentioned in the numerous trade rumors over the past several days is that of star forward Jakub Voracek. On Saturday National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that Voracek and the Flyers have discussed a mutual parting of ways with both parties believing that a change of scenery would be best moving forward.

According to Friedman the Flyers have already informed Voracek that he will not be protected by the team in the upcoming expansion draft, meaning that the Seattle Kraken will effectively have the option of picking him up for free. There is of course the matter of the 3 years remaining on his contract at a cap hit of $8.25 million, but Voracek remains a very productive player with 43 points over just 53 games with the Flyers this season. Should the Kraken fail to select him in their expansion draft it sounds like the Flyers and Voracek are both still committed to moving on in the offseason.

There will be a "legit attempt" to trade Voracek should the Kraken pass on his services, although it is also believed that both sides have prepared for the possibility that a trade will not occur. Despite his obvious talent, working out a trade for a player making $8.25 million per season with a flat salary cap is not going to be an easy task.

If Voracek has played his final game in Philadelphia it certainly marks the end of this chapter in the history of the Flyers franchise, somewhat fitting given how Voracek initially joined the team. On the now infamous day in which both Flyers forwards Mike Richards and Jeff Carter were dealt when the Flyers closed turn the page on another chapter in their history, Voracek was brought into the fold as part of the deal that sent Carter to the Columbus Blue Jackets. The former 1st round pick (7th overall) at the 2007 draft has since rewarded the Flyers by putting up numbers he never came close to reaching as a Blue Jacket, but it would seem the time has come to turn this page as well.
