Riot police called in after Habs fans go wild in the streets

Habs fans sure have an interesting way of celebrating...

In case you missed it, the Montreal Canadiens completed their second round sweep of the Winnipeg Jets last night in impressive fashion. Habs rookie Cole Caufield added to his growing reputation as a clutch performer with an incredible pass to linemate Tyler Toffoli for the game winner.

Check it out:

And just like that the Habs are headed to the Stanley Cup semi-final! They'll face the eventual winner of the Colorado Avalanche vs Vegas Golden Knights series in what should prove to be an exciting series. Personally, without a dog in the fight I'm pulling for the Avs and hoping they'll wear their Nordiques throwback jerseys in a series against the Habs... but I realize that's probably silly.

In any case, Toffoli's OT winner sent Habs fans spilling into the streets where the celebrations continued until the wee hours of the morning. In fact, riot police were called upon to quell fans and keep things under control.

Check out some of these videos/photos from individuals who were on the scene:

I have not seen any reports of any arrests or any interactions between police and fans, so it seems that the celebration was mostly jovial. I've got to say though... Montrealers sure have an interesting way of celebrating. The city has a reputation of celebrating, rather than co-miserating, by rioting in the streets. It's like the polar opposite of Vancouver, if you will. Vancouver Canucks fans, of course, turned their city upside down after losing both the 1994 and the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals. In Montreal though... they riot if the Habs win a second round series...

In any case, like I said it appears that the celebrations were mostly well-natured and there are no reports of arrests or property damage as a result of last night's party. And honestly, you have to feel good for Habs fans. This is a team that everyone overlooked heading into the playoffs. They had an inconsistent regular season and most people figured they'd get starched by the Toronto Maple Leafs. After an improbable 3-1 series comeback, the Habs then made the Jets look like a minor league team. Don't look now, but this is a team on a serious streak and they have the potential to go all the way.
