Report: Major announcement expected on NHL season tomorrow
Zuma Press

In his latest column for The Toronto Sun, longtime NHL journalist Kevin McGran reports that the NHL and the NHL Player's Association is set to meet and vote on a comprehensive plan for the 2021 season as early tomorrow. According to McGran, the NHLPA could vote when they meet tomorrow afternoon with a subsequent vote from the NHL board of governors to come on Thursday. If things indeed play out that way, we'll have a significant bit of news to report tomorrow afternoon.

From McGran's column:

The 31-member NHL Players’ Association executive committee could vote as early as Wednesday, followed by the board of governors Thursday, on a wide-ranging plan that includes how the schedule and cross-border trades will work.
“They’re working around the clock on transitional rules and return-to-play protocols, and working to firm up agreements for logistical issues,” said an industry source, granted anonymity in order to speak freely before the deal is finalized.
“I don’t think there are any issues that will stop this from getting done,” said a second industry source, granted anonymity for the same reason. “It’s just a matter of how long it’s going to take. I don’t see any reason not to play a season.”

Suffice it to say that the clock is ticking on the proposed season. The NHL initially planned to be back on the ice for January 1st, but that seems nearly impossible at this rate. After stalling negotiations for the better part of a month, the NHL finally came off their financial demands from the NHLPA and are now targeting a mid-January start date thought to be sometime between January 13th and January 16th.

Stay tuned, hockey fans.
