The Montreal Canadiens faced off against the Ottawa Senators on Friday, however, defenseman Sami Niku won’t remember much of it. That’s because the Habs’ blue liner was taken out of the game by Josh Norris, who delivered a brutal and dangerous hit on the new Canadiens’ player.

As insider Arpon Basu of the Athletic points out, Niku got “slammed into the glass from behind by Josh Norris, who somehow doesn’t get a penalty. Niku straight to the room, looking woozy, his blood was being scraped off the ice here.”

Niku was shaken up big time on the play:

The referees simply decided to look the other way. I mean the ref is right there! Niku was sent to the dressing room for repairs and was not back on the bench for the start of the second period. It was later announced by the team that the defenseman was done for the night with an upper-body injury.

Once again, Basu shared some bad news on Niku, who was expected to shine this weekend to prove he could earn a spot on the Habs’ roster.

“Very tough break for Sami Niku, who did not look very stable leaving the ice after that hit by Josh Norris. Niku was probably going to play both these games against the Senators because there was a real opportunity for him. Now obviously that is looking doubtful.”

Tough break indeed…
