The New York Rangers were so desperate to get Marc Staal's cap hit off their books in 2020 that they willingly paid Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman the handsome fee of a 2nd round draft selection to take Staal's contract off their hands. On Sunday Yzerman revealed just how happy he was to make that move in September of last year when he announced that he had signed Staal to a brand new deal, keeping him within the Red Wings fold for another season.

The Red Wings have officially announced that they have re-signed Marc Staal to a one year contract for the 2021 - 2022 regular season, a sign that they liked what they saw from Staal in his short time with the organization. The Red Wings did not disclose the financial terms of this deal, however multiple reports have since revealed that this contract will earn Staal $2 million next season. That is yet another indication that the Red Wings value what he brings to the table, although with their abundance of cap space they can certainly afford to spend on short term deals such as this one.

What does make this somewhat of a curious move on the part of Yzerman however is his decision to include a full no movement clause in this deal. This means that come the National Hockey League's trade deadline in 2022, the Red Wings will need Staal's permission to trade him should they wish to do so. Staal would appear to be exactly the kind of asset you would want to flip at the deadline if your team is out of playoff contention, and this will severely limit Yzerman's ability to do so entirely or at the very least his options even in a best case scenario.

That may seem like a bit of a head scratcher but I suspect that giving Staal the no movement clause may have been key part of getting him to re-sign for another year with the Red Wings. Marc and his wife Lindsay have 3 young children, and no doubt being able to stay rooted in one place for an extended period of time is important to them.
