Red Wings lose forward Mathias Bromé to his native Europe

While the rebuilding Detroit Red Wings will undoubtedly undergo additional changes this offseason, we've already gotten word on the first player that will not be back wearing the Winged Wheel in the Motor City next season.

That player happens to be forward Mathias Bromé, who is returning home to his native Europe, and according to a local publication, had have plenty of options to choose from on whom to suit up for his next club. The publication then goes on to say that the ex-Red Wing will be teaming up with his former coach Jörgen Jönsson with the Swiss team HC Davos. 

A rough translation reads: 

"He has been successful in Mora and in Örebro. And for this season, Mathias Bromé chose to sign a contract with the Detroit Red Wings. But due to covid-19, the season was hacked for Bromé who started with Örebro, but ended the season within the Red Wings organization.

Now he has announced that he will go home to Europe and several clubs in the SHL, according to information including Örebro, Leksand and Malmö, were interested.

But it will be Davos that will be the new home address for the 26-year-old. There he is reunited with his former coach Jörgen Jönsson."

Bromé was originally signed to a one year, two-way deal as an undrafted free agent by the Red Wings in April of 2020. Later in August, he joined the Swedish club Örebro HK on loan until the NHL Season that had been delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic got underway.

Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman had this to say about Bromé upon his signing with the club in 2020:

“I like his hockey sense, I like his competitiveness,” Yzerman said after the signing was made complete. “He’s not a Henrik Zetterberg- or Pavel Datsyuk-type of finesse player, he’s a worker with some skills and can contribute and make plays and finish a little bit. We’ll see if that translates in the NHL...He’s a good skater, has good skills. He’s a worker, very competitive, with good hockey sense.”

In 26 games played with the Red Wings, Bromé tallied a goal and an assist along with eight penalty minutes. The 6'0, 183 lb. left wing is a native of Örby in Stockholm, Sweden.
