The roster for the Detroit Red Wings has officially been trimmed to 51 names as the regular season draws closer, now only eight days remaining.

Earlier this morning, they announced that defenseman Alex Cotton has been assigned to the Western Hockey League's Lethbridge Hurricanes. Meanwhile, the team has also released right wing forward Davis "T-Bone" Codd and defenseman Mason Word from their amateur tryouts.

The Red Wings, who are 3-2 so far in exhibition play, will be taking on the Columbus Blue Jackets from Nationwide Arena later this evening. They also have games scheduled against the Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres remaining on their schedule prior to facing the Tampa Bay Lightning on October 14 at Little Caesars Arena in the regular season opener.
