Red Wings and Islanders pull off a minor trade.

The New York Islanders and Detroit Red Wings have come together to execute a relatively small trade. 

Although this one has gone largely unreported, the deal was actually made official on Friday night when the two sides agreed to send forward Dmytro Timashov from Detroit to New York in exchange for what has been simply described as "future considerations." This means that Timashov will now be joining his 3rd team in just 2 National Hockey League seasons, obviously not a good sign for his future in the league.

Timashov was once regarded as a serviceable prospect for the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Leafs selected him in the fifth round (125th overall) of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, but his career has been in something of a weird place since being placed on waivers by the Leafs in February. When the Leafs waived Timashov he was quickly picked up by the Red Wings, but shortly after the pandemic struck the world and forced the NHL season to shut down. The Red Wings were not invited to play inside the NHL's playoff bubble and for that reason the young forward has been sidelined for the better part of a year now.

Although being traded for effectively nothing can not feel good for a 24 year old NHL player, there is a silver lining here for Timashov. When he was claimed by the Red Wings he was being picked up by the worst team in the NHL that year, now off the heels of this trade he will be headed  to a much more competitive New York Islanders squad that is coming off a deep run in the playoffs.

Thus far over his career his biggest showing has no doubt come as a member of the Maple Leafs where he had 39 games under his belt. Over those games he recorded all 9 of his career NHL points, 4 goals and 5 assists, although he did play 5 NHL games in Detroit where he had no points. His greatest skill is his vision for the game as well as his passing ability although it will be interesting to see how his liabilities on defensive side of the ice will mesh with head coach Barry Trotz of the Islanders.
