Rangers taking another run at Jack Eichel!

The Jack Eichel talks remain alive and loud and it sounds like the New York Rangers are back into the mix.

Eichel has been trending in trade rumours ever since the Buffalo Sabres were out of contention, and talks heated up when the captain admitted that he would mull over his future with the organization this summer. He was especially upset with the Buffalo Sabres’ demands not to undergo surgery on the herniated disc in his neck. Eichel went on to say that there’s a “disconnect” between him and the Sabres organization regarding a neck injury that he suffered and that his focus is on getting healthy for next season “wherever that may be.”

We’ve heard rumours of many teams entering trade talks, including the Vegas Golden Knights, along with the Minnesota Wild, Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Philadelphia Flyers and Rangers were interested and now Frank Seravalli of Daily Face-off reports that the Blue Shirts are taking another go at Eichel, despite the high demand and expensive price tag.

It’s been said more than once that the asking price is too much. Just recently, TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reported that the Sabres will be expecting to demand a 2021 first-round pick as part of their return for Eichel, putting the timeline for a deal ahead of the July 23 NHL Draft.

This is what Seravelli reports:

“Sources say the Rangers have quietly checked with each of the teams holding a pick inside the Top 10 of Friday’s Draft, inquiring about the price to acquire it. (New York’s first-round pick is No. 16 overall.) The belief is the Rangers would like to package that pick in a transaction for Eichel, as the Sabres are reportedly seeking another lottery-range pick to go with their No. 1 overall selection.
Teams in conversation with the Sabres have said the asking price for Eichel is “astronomical.” Buffalo is looking for a futures-type deal with multiple prospects and picks involved.”

On Friday morning, Rangers insider for the New York Post Larry Brooks confirms that the price tag remains the same.

Eichel is under contract through 2025-26 with a $10-million cap hit and played his last game of the campaign for the league-worst Sabres on March 7 before being ruled out for the remainder due to his neck injury.

With the NHL Draft taking place tonight, a deal could strike later today! This will be a busy day for the Sabres, who could also get some picks in return for forward Sam Reinhart or defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen.
