The rumour’s reported by an insider, who doesn’t believe the Maple Leafs will re-sign the goalie.

As insider Dan Kingerski of Pittsburgh Hockey Now reported a well-placed source within the Penguins organization stated that the club intends to protect goalie Tristan Jarry and forward Evgeni Malkin in next month’s expansion draft for the Seattle Kraken, he also mentioned something else that’s very intriguing.

According to Kingerski, the Penguins have interest in Toronto Maple Leafs pending free agent goalie Frederik Andersen to serve as a strong backup for Jarry.

“A team source specifically mentioned his name as someone the Penguins are looking at as a veteran goalie who has performed well in the NHL postseason. Andersen struggled this season, as did several North Division goalies behind absentee blue liners.”
“Circle Andersen’s name as someone the Pittsburgh Penguins are already watching. The team could make a solid pitch pending the goalie market, which was a heavy buyer’s market last fall and figures to be again with the flat salary cap.”

Andersen’s five-year $25 million contract expires this summer as he will become an unrestricted free agent.

In last week’s end of season press conference, Andersen, who got sidelined with a lower-body in mid-March, hinted at the possibility of playing for another team next season.

“I want to talk to Kyle [Dubas] here and see where he’s at. I don’t want to look past that conversation at all. We have to see what makes sense for both parties. More than that, I don’t really know.
“I’ve had 5 years here. I’ve really enjoyed my time here. Overall, I’ll definitely look back on these 5 years with a lot of good memories. With regards to the future, I don’t know what’s in store yet. We’ll see.”

As the goalie was asked about his offseason training in Denmark, Andersen revealed what he wants to work on to be better for any team he will join, whenever it’s the Maple Leafs again or another team in the NHL.

This could mean he will test the free agency waters or that the Maple Leafs could work on a quick trade to send him elsewhere. And it sounds like the Penguins are interested.
