A long time veteran of the National Hockey League appears to be in some hot water in his home country of Sweden after allegations of domestic abuse have surfaced.

According to a report from Swedish outlet Gefle Dagblad, former NHLer Patrik Berglund is currently being investigated after being suspected of committing a crime against his then girlfriend. The news comes after nearly a month long absence from Berglund who has been away from his team, Brynas IF Gavle of the Swedish Hockey League.

Although the details surrounding this story appear to still be very murky, the assistant prosecutor that has been assigned to the case has confirmed that he is currently in the early stages of an investigation into Berglund and into the matter alleged by his now ex-girlfriend.

"I have recently started a preliminary investigation. I can not comment further at the moment," said Katinka Enström who leads the investigation.

Berglund, who tested positive for COVID-19 in March, has reportedly been quite ill and has been sidelined ever since, but this investigation will be another reason behind his lack of play on the ice as of late. The alleged victim in this case says she has received support from Brynas, Berglund's current team, as well as the player's union in that league which is honestly a great thing if these allegations are proven to be true.

For what it's worth, Brynas appeared to confirm that the investigation was ongoing but for obvious reasons would not comment on an off ice matter involving one of their own players.

"What I can say is that we have an ongoing personnel matter about one of our players and we can not comment on that ," said Brynas communications director Martin Löf Nyqvist.

Now of course it is very important to remember that there are always two sides to every story and at the time of this writing Berglund should still be presumed innocent until the investigation into the matter has concluded. His lawyer Gustaf Andersson told reporters that his client has not been notified of a crime and has denied that his client has committed a crime against the plaintiff in this case.

Berglund famously left the National Hockey League under some very unusual circumstances following a trade to the Buffalo Sabres. Berglund effectively chose not to play for that team and left a whopping $12.5 million on the table to return to his home country of Sweden.

No word yet on when the investigation may wrap up, so stay tuned for all the details on this one.
