It was an exciting night on Monday for Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin as he scored his 717th career goal to tie Phil Esposito for sixth in NHL history.

However, his services weren’t needed towards the end of the game. The Capitals humiliated the Buffalo Sabres on Monday, blanking them 6-0.

While Ovechkin’s goal was the last scored in the contest, he remained on the bench for much of the third period. He was on the ice for just five minutes and 40 seconds of the third period.

Most fans noticed it when the Sabres were called for hooking in the third period and Taylor Hall headed to the penalty box. For the first time in 10 years according to a Capitals insider, Ovechkin did not take part in the postseason.

The fourth line was sent out for the power-play. Fans were quick to react on social media, but clearly it didn’t bother Ovi who scored his history-making goal moments later.

The Sabres are dead last in the league and we can’t imagine that things going worse for them. Wow!
