The Edmonton Oilers concluded a relatively minor piece of business on Saturday, re-signing a long time member of their extended roster.

According to an announcement published on the Oilers official website, the franchise has signed restricted free agent forward Cooper Marody to a one year, two way, contract extension. Marody was coming off of his entry level contract and his rights were controlled by the Oilers, so this signing was entirely to be expected.

Although drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers at the 2015 National Hockey League Entry Draft, Marody has spent his entire professional hockey career as a member of the Oilers who acquired him via a trade while he was still at the University of Michigan. At the time the Oilers paid what many thought was too rich of a price, giving up a third round draft selection at the 2019 NHL Entry Draft (a pick that previously belonged to the New Jersey Devils) in exchange for the rights to Marody. Not too big a price, but a significant one when considering the fact that not many pundits had the young forward pegged as a future NHLer.

Despite that Marody has performed well for the Oilers, though he has done so primarily with the organization's American Hockey League affiliate the Bakersfield Condors. In his most recent season Marody had an impressive 21 goals and 15 assists for a total of 36 points in 39 AHL games, no doubt playing a big role in the Oilers decision to offer him another contract in the offseason.

In spite of his success at the AHL level for the Condors however, this new deal will represent something of a significant pay cut for Marody, at least as far as his NHL salary is concerned. After having previously earned an average annual value of $1 million per season in the three years of his entry level contract, Marody will now earn $750,000 at the NHL level, the league minimum.

Given how limited Marody's NHL experience has been it is unclear how much of an impact that will have. Since joining the Oilers Marody has only appeared in 6 regular season games for Edmonton, all of which are relatively far removed now with him having played all 6 of his NHL games during the 2018 - 2019 campaign.
