NHL fires referee Tim Peel after last night’s incident!

The National Hockey League did not waste time. The league has just announced that referee Tim Peel, following his comments during the game last night between the Detroit Red Wings and Nashville Predators, no longer will be working NHL games now or in the future.

This is the statement from National Hockey League Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell :

“Nothing is more important than ensuring the integrity of our game,” Campbell said. “Tim Peel’s conduct is in direct contradiction to the adherence to that cornerstone principle that we demand of our officials and that our fans, players, coaches and all those associated with our game expect and deserve. There is no justification for his comments, no matter the context or his intention, and the National Hockey League will take any and all steps necessary to protect the integrity our game.”

This is because of what took place in last night's game between the Detroit Red Wings and Nashville Predators. Comments made by Peel were caught on a hot mic and it was determined that it was Peel.

After Viktor Arvidsson was called for tripping Jon Merrill, Peel was heard on the FOX broadcast saying, “It wasn’t much, but I wanted to get a fuckin’ penalty against Nashville early in the …” before the audio cut out.

While the Predators managed to kill Arvidsson’s penalty and go one to win the game 2-0,  the hot-mic moment hung over the contest and is making waves today. When the penalty was called, Arvidsson could not believe he was going to the box for what he thought was meaningless. The replay seemed to backed up his reaction. Predators television analyst Chris Mason went as far as calling it a dive on the part of Merrill.

You have to understand that this is probably not the first time a referee makes a questionable call - duh! But this is more than questionable, this is a make-up one that was caught on tape!

And now Peel is paying for it! Peel was scheduled to retire later this season. His final game was April 24. This is a much brutal way to go...
