No longer a rumor.

The situation surrounding New York Rangers defenseman Tony DeAngelo went from bizarre to completely off the rails on Sunday after a chain of events have resulted in what is now believed to be DeAngelo's ouster from the organization.

The Rangers themselves made the first waves this morning when they made the decision to waive DeAngelo, an unusual decision considering the Rangers had signed the defenseman to a 2 year deal in the offseason that carries an average annual value of $4.8 million. That normally would have been enough to send up some smoke signals, but most just chalked it up to the Rangers having finally grown tired of DeAngelo's controversial personality after his poor start to the regular season.

It wasn't until later on Sunday that rumors began to make the rounds suggesting that DeAngelo had provoked a physical altercation with a Rangers teammate. Those rumors were wildly varied in their nature but the general consensus seemed to be that DeAngelo had provoked a teammate while going down the tunnel to the locker room after a 5-4 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday, with that provocation resulting in DeAngelo being punched.

Those rumors are rumors no longer as multiple sources have come forward to corroborate the story, and identify at least one of the teammates involved in the altercation with DeAngelo. According to The Athletic's Rick Carpiniello, three different sources have confirmed that the incident did take place and that the altercation was between the aforementioned DeAngelo and Rangers goaltender Alexandar Georgiev.

In light of what happened in the final moments of that game against the Penguins it should come as no surprise that it was these two who butted heads on the walk back to the locker room. Georgiev badly misplayed the puck in the final moments of the game, leading to a Sidney Crosby goal in overtime while DeAngelo was out on the ice. I would not be surprised to learn that DeAngelo may have been less than pleased about that mistake on his way back to the locker room.

When rumors of this story first broke there were rumors of another player potentially being involved in this incident but those remain mere rumors at this time. Rangers reporter Adam Herman has hinted that there is more to this story yet to be revealed however, so stay tuned as we will be keeping you up to date.
