Canadiens fans are on edge and nearly fell off when a Montreal media, TVA Nouvelles, posted a faulty report on the Jesperi Kotkaniemi offer sheet situation.

As everyone is weighing on whether GM Marc Bergevin will match or not the Carolina Hurricanes’ $6.1 million offer to the young centre, a report came out that the Habs had chosen to match it and keep Kotkaniemi in Montreal.

However, TVA pulled the trigger too fast with most likely two reports ready to send, one that says Kotkaniemi stays, one that claims he goes. Unfortunately for the person working, the news was sent out and everyone jumped on it.

TVA Nouvelles sent, moments later, a correction on their monumental mistake that  got fans baffled on this deadline day.

The Canadiens have until about 5h30PMET to make their decision on Kotkaniemi’s future. This false news was shocking seeing that more and more, it feels like there’s a real chance that the Canadiens will become the first team since 2007 to not match an offer sheet. Last time was when the Anaheim Ducks refused to match Dustin Penner’s 5 years, $21.5 million offer sheet tended by the Edmonton Oilers.

Fans and pundits are getting impatient and already predict the outcome - most folks believe the offer won’t be match. Earlier this week, Sportsnet insider for the Canadiens Eric Engels has mentioned that GM Marc Bergevin had already made up his mind to let Kotkaniemi walk.

“Right now I think the most likely scenario is they’re going to let him walk, and replace him via trade,” Engels had said.

There is also talk that the Canadiens could use the compensation from the Hurricanes to pry Christian Dvorak out of Arizona

But like the Hurricanes, fans are still waiting and will now be careful with every tweet coming out on the Kotkaniemi situation.

WOW.
