Monday waiver wire: Updates on Byron, Galchenyuk, and more.
Keystone Press

We had a busy day on the waiver wire on Sunday but in spite of that it looks like everything will be remaining status quo, with perhaps one exception.

The two big names on the waiver wire yesterday were Paul Byron of the Montreal Canadiens and Alex Galchenyuk of the Carolina Hurricanes with Danny DekeyserPar Lindholm, and Gabriel Carlsson rounding out the group, but all 5 of these players have cleared. This is relatively unsurprising given the current climate of the NHL, but it is still significant.

The big winners here are the Canadiens who will not be using Paul Byron and his contract to accrue additional cap space, a tactic that has become widely popularized this season with so many teams facing the cap crunch. Placing Byron on waivers was a risk on the part of the Canadiens, a team like the Ottawa Senators could in theory have claimed him, but it is a risk that will now pay off big time.

The other player that could have been claimed was Alex Galchenyuk, a former 3rd overall pick in the draft that has fallen on hard times, especially considering that he carries a cap hit of just over $1 million on his current deal. That being said it seems that teams willing to give this guy another shot at finding his way again have finally run out.

Dekeyser has been a healthy scratch several night on a bad Red Wings team, he was never going anywhere.

Par Lindholm signed a contract with a Swedish team so there was also no doubt about him going unclaimed.

And last but not least Gabriel Carlsson is a role player for the Blue Jackets, and even though he only carries a cap hit of $725,000, team's can't afford to give up that much cap space for a roleplayer in this current NHL climate.

No new waivers today.
