On Friday morning, the Florida Panthers announced they had re-signed captain Aleksander Barkov to an eight-year extension worth $80 million. While this is a great accomplishment for the Panthers’ star, the focus quickly shifted to Mitch Marner and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

You know: a huge contract was handed and so Leafs fans need to talk about how Marner is overpaid.

Back in the 2019 offseason, the Maple Leafs inked Marner to a six-year contract with an average annual value of $10.893 million.

Yes, that’s more than what Barkov will cash it when his new deal kicks in at the start of the 2022-23 season. Last season, he tallied 26 goals and 32 assists in 50 games.

Marner, on the other hand, had 20 goals and 67 points in 55 games, but quickly was destroyed by fans for his poor performance in the postseason, which as you know ended abruptly in the first round after the Maple Leafs were ousted by the Montreal Canadiens.

Fans in Toronto just expected more of Marner and ever since, his contract has been criticized. And again today, as Marner was trending in comparison to Barkov’s contract. Check some of the tweets that got him trending for all the wrong reasons:
