Miscue by Washington's Ilya Samsonov leads to 2OT winner for Boston Bruins

Washington Capitals goaltender Ilya Samsonov is going to be on the wrong end of the highlight reels for the rest of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. For his teammates, they hope that it will just be a blip on the radar of a successful championship run. 

The Boston Bruins took a 2-1 series lead over the Capitals with a double overtime victory in Game 3 of their Round 1 Stanley Cup Playoff series tonight at TD Garden in Boston, and it wasn't exactly how the Bruins drew it up in the dressing room. 

Samsonov misplayed the puck behind the net after leaving it while anticipating the arrival defenseman Justin Schultz. However, Schultz didn't get there in time. That paved the way for Craig Smith to swoop in, grab the puck and tuck it in behind a scrambling Samsonov at 5:48 of the second overtime: 

The mistake spoiled what was otherwise a fine performance in net for Samsonov, who made 40 saves in a losing effort in his Stanley Cup Playoffs debut. His counterpart in the Boston crease, seasoned veteran Tuukka Rask, finished with 35 saves. Samsonov was able to fend off the Bruins in the 1st period, who enjoyed two power plays and a 5 on 3 in the opening frame. 

The Bruins got goals in regulation from Taylor Hall and Brad Marchand, who were countered by goals from Alex Ovechkin and Nic Dowd for Washington.

Game 4 between the two teams will be this Friday starting at 6:30 PM EST.
