Earlier this week, it was announced that longtime NBC broadcaster Mike Milbury has not had his contract renewed by the company, effectively cutting him loose and making him a free agent.

This made a lot of fans happy, seeing that Milbury isn’t a favourite on the air and is often heavily criticized for his comments and analysis of the game. He puts his foot in his mouth more than a newborn baby and he’s just simply fallen out of touch with modern day hockey and modern day hockey fans.

Plus, fans love to hate him and that’s why they will enjoy the story former NHL goalie Rick Dipietro told on the Cam and Strick podcast. It is simply unbelievable.

As you know DiPietro was drafted first overall by the  New York Islanders  in the  2000 NHL Entry Draft. Milbury was the Isles general manager and traded incumbent goalie Roberto Luongo to create room DiPietro. So the pressure was on.

The former goalie does say he likes Milbury, seeing that he’s the one who believed in him, however, he recalls a story in which Milbury is an absolute jerk and explains how the former GM comes off as harsh to a lot of people until you get to know him. But it didn’t stop DiPietro from saying these awful things about Milbury.

He recalls the interaction he had with his GM at the time after a brutal double overtime loss in the AHL’s Calder Cup finals.

“He went one by one, he was like ‘you, you’re terrible, DiPietro what happened to you, you got dominated by the other goalie, he handles the puck better than you’, and like that around the room.

“Then we had the one-on-one meetings, and we’re going back and forth, and he said something to me and for some reason it snapped in my head, and he was like ‘F you, F you’, back and forth. He gave me some gift, a framed picture of the Islanders making the playoffs or something and as I walked out I said ‘Thanks for the gift’ and I threw it on the floor and broke it.”
