Well, this isn't the news that fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs wanted to hear as their team continues preparations for their season opener this Wednesday against the Montreal Canadiens.

Superstar forward Auston Matthews, who underwent wrist surgery during the offseason, will be unavailable for at least the first three games of the season. Meanwhile, Ilya Mikheyev will be absent for at least the next eight weeks as he's set to undergo thumb surgery:

Matthews, the reigning Rocket Richard Trophy winner, was expected to to be out a minimum of six weeks. He recently joined his teammates on September 28 and has been participating in drills. However, head coach Sheldon Keefe didn't sound confident that he'd be able to begin the regular season.
