An incredible start.

There has been a ton of hype surrounding the performance of veteran goaltender Jack Campbell during his relatively short time as the goaltender of the Toronto Maple Leafs and at this point I think we can all say that the hype is real.

On Saturday night Campbell had arguably one of his weaker performances since debuting for the Leafs when he allowed the Senators to send 5 pucks across the goal line. That could very well have been the storyline this evening but instead Campbell was bailed out by his teammates who recorded a whopping 6 goals, and thanks to that helping hand from his team he is now in sole possession of an amazing National Hockey League record.

The win improved Campbell's record to 11-0-0, that is to say 11 wins without a single loss in either regulation or overtime, and his record is good enough for the best start to a season in the history of the NHL. Although he was bailed out on Saturday night you would be hard pressed to argue that Campbell did not earn his spot in the history books. In spite of a shaky night this evening he has recorded a 1.88 goals against average and a .934 save percentage over those 11 starts, truly a testament to how good and how consistent he has been for this Maple Leafs team.

Campbell, who has quickly earned himself a reputation as one of the truly nice guys in the NHL, was quick to praise his teammates for breaking the record. Rather than taking in the moment all for himself, he was quick to suggest that he would need to take his fellow teammates out for a dinner at Red Lobster in order to properly thank them for their efforts in helping him put his name in the history books.

I can't image what the moment must have felt like for Campbell, as this is no ordinary story. The 29 year old netminder was originally drafted in the first round (11th overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the Dallas Stars but never really got a shot to play any significant number of games until the 2018-2019 season as a member of the Los Angeles Kings. It has been an incredibly long and hard role for Campbell to be recognized as the talent he is, and no doubt this moment felt like a validation of all his years of hard work.
