On Thursday, the NHL and NHL Players’ Association announced in a release that Montreal Canadiens star goalie Carey Price will be away from the team while he takes part in the player assistance program.

The news nearly broke the internet and definitely did the heart of GM Marc Bergevin and fans across the city, who did not expect to lose Price. However, the consensus is almost unanimous: Price needs to get better and is very courageous for making the decision to seek help.

Later on Thursday night, Chris Johnston shared a first update on Price as fans wonder about the timeline of his absence. This is what he reported on the latest edition of Insider Trading on TSN:

“Well, there basically is no timeline. There isn’t one that exists. And Marc Bergevin told reporters on Thursday morning that, yes, they think it will be about 30 days that Carey Price is away from the team dealing with this issue. But the fact of the way this program works with the NHL and NHLPA is that that’s completely up to the doctors, the treatments and timelines. So it’s out of the hands of the team. You know, Montreal only learned of Carey Price having this issue on Wednesday and they’ll just have to wait and see how long it is before he’s ready to be back and getting onto the ice for them.”

It was an emotional day for the Canadiens and especially its general manager. Bergevin grew emotional when asked about what Price means to him, taking a lengthy pause to regain control.

“It’s hard,” he said eventually.

When asked about his return, Bergevin stuck to what he knew about the program and its 30 days, but seems to be in line with what Johnston is reporting.

“From what I was told it would most likely be that, but it’s not certain. It could be more,” he said.

We wish Price all the best and for him to take all the time he needs.
