Justin Williams might have retired from playing hockey this offseason, however, he is not done with the National Hockey League, or the Carolina Hurricanes for that matter.

On Friday, the Hurricanes announced that Williams has been hired as a special advisor to general manager Don Waddell.

Fans and players will be excited to have Williams back with the Hurricanes. He who returned to Carolina as a free agent back in 2017 remains an inspiring leader in the city. Named captain by new head coach Rod Brind’Amour in 2018-19, Williams led the Canes back to the playoffs for the first time since 2009. The Canes returned to the playoffs this season after the extended pause caused by the pandemic. Williams had come out of semi-retirement in January to rejoin the team.

He finally hung up the skates for good in October 2020, but we all had a feeling he couldn’t get away from the Hurricanes.

This is a tremendous announcement for Williams and the Hurricanes and we cannot wait to see what impact he has - again - on the team.

Williams recorded 797 points (320g, 477a) in 1,264 career NHL games with the Hurricanes, Flyers, Kings and Capitals. He is a three-time Stanley Cup Champion, winning titles with Carolina in 2006 and Los Angeles in 2012 and 2014. Williams also won the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2014, awarded to the most valuable player during the playoffs.
